I was drawn to the study of psychology after reconizing unhealthy patterns in my relationships and groups with which I was affiliated. I also wanted to study the brain through psychology to understand both my own mental health and the health of multiple children with comorbid diagnoses of ASD, ADHD, Bi-polar, ODD, and OCD. What I learned was that there are repetitive forms of unethical persuasion commonly used in most group dynamics.
I wanted my children to learn the primary, repetitious principles that were common in ALL unhealthy groups according to the experts and their decades of research, but I could not find any books geared toward teens or children on this topic. As a tool to help teach my own children, I summarized what I learned in 25 psychology books from two top cult researchers, (Steven Hassen and Janja LaLich) into a children’s version, “Protecting Children from Unethical Persuasion,” which was endorsed by both Ph.D.s and is now in three languages and 12 countries. I would go on for the next year to write an eight-book value-based parenting series that teaches US versus THEM thinking, unethical persuasion, including critical thinking skills, confirmation bias, core values, choice, hard work, financial skills, shame resilience and connection. All of my children's books are illustrated and some are co-authored by my children. These concepts also lend themselves to today’s topics and issues in group politics, group social media, racism, sexism, and all other sorts of “isms” in our culture and education. I hope these books will serve as a resource for parents and children to critically assess any group or relationships they have now and in the future.
The information contained in my Value Based Parenting Series is what I want to teach my own children, and now I'm sharing these resources with you. It is my hope that this website can serve as a resource to bring all humans closer by teaching critical thinking skills and eliminating US vs. THEM thinking in the rising generation. We are all one! We can look past our differences and remain united as friends and family. No matter what you believe, RELATIONSHIPS are more important than beliefs.
Gretchen is the mother of eight children and has taught or practiced yoga for over 25 years. She loves the principles of positivity and mindfulness and uses them by trying to be friends with all she meets. She served a year speaking on, "Replacing US vs THEM thinking with TOLERANCE," as Mrs. Utah International 2021.
The pdf documents and power point presentations under the ADHD and ASD resources include tables, charts, blogs and relative research I have done during my graduate degree in psychology.
